The People Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to contest the governorship election in Anambra State slated for February next year whether the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) likes or not. The party said at its 49th National Executive Committee(NEC) meeting last week that PDP is the only one known in the state and therefore very confident that the election would swing in its favour.
Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan, who fired the first shot said he was unperturbed by the current political situation in Anambra State adding INEC cannot stop PDP from contesting the next February 6, governorship election. He said even if angels were called to conduct elections in the country, PDP will continue to win, just as he urged party members not to be intimidated by what they read on the pages of newspapers.
“We have a challenge now in terms of Anambra election and as 2011 is moving nearer, the challenges will be more because we are approaching our election. And, I believe the Anambra election is another test case. To me, I am not really worried about the Anambra election because if you look at the INEC position, PDP is contesting the election,” he said.
“They are not saying PDP will not contest the election, the issue is that we have yet to sort out our candidate and I believe it is a classical case and all Nigerians will be watching how these things will progress. My conviction is that PDP will contest Anambra election. My conviction is that, of course, INEC cannot stop PDP from contesting the election.
Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, national chairman of the party warned members of the party who have decamped to other parties to have a re-think and return to the party as they would be subjected to thorough screening and investigations if they returned to the party. Dr. Andy Uba, had recently dumped the party for the Labour Party while Nicholas Ukachukwu joined the Hope Party to actualise their dreams of ruling Anambra State.
“Those who defected to other parties are warned to have a re-think; as they will be subjected to thorough screening and investigations on their return. Let me also state categorically that any member of our party that supports or sponsors a candidate from another political party is guilty of anti-party activity. Our newly-reformed PDP will no longer tolerate such acts of indiscipline or reward acts of disloyalty,” warned Ogbulafor.
Inec released names of 24 standard bearers of the political parties and their deputies cleared for the February 6, 2010 gubernatorial election in Anambra state. Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s name the PDP candidate was however, not on the list as he was not cleared due to litigation in court litigation.
