THE negative impact of the global economic meltdown is not yet over for Nigeria as many international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have continued to scale down their operations in the country. BusinessWorld Intelligence can disclose that following the financial crisis that hit the world last year, many NGOs who previously expended huge sums on counterpart funding of developmental projects in the country are now shifting their initial direct financial involvement in projects to advocacy.
Donor inflows into the country have reduced since the economic downturn that has left many rich nations battered. BusinessWorld Intelligence gathered that although many rich nations depended on donations from corporate organizations and individuals in their various countries to help development efforts in third world countries, the ravaging recession has impeded the continuity of such magnanimity thereby making it impossible for activities of development agencies that hitherto carried out the execution to continue.
BusinessWorld Intelligence can disclose that donor assistance to Nigeria increased considerably since the inception of democratic rule in 1999 which enhanced intervention in critical projects in the country. Nigerian top officials who benefited from such funds have persistently reminded the rich donor nations not to break their promise to give financial assistance to countries with credible national action plans including Nigeria.
Before the economic recess, some development partners who were expecting large sums from their governments this year were planning to drag some top Nigerian government officials who request for bribes from them to Aso Rock Villa for severe disciplinary actions. They alleged some government officials were in the habit of demanding for gratification from them threatening to write unfavourable reports on the activities of such aid organizations and cause government to expel them.
An official of a development agency expressed disappointment saying never has development agencies faced bribe request from governmental officials as the present top echelon government officials are openly doing. The official said plans are underway to address the issue at the highest level of authority in Nigeria.
The official also fingered some powerful legislators as equally guilty of requesting for gratification from them, saying they insist if such agencies needed the support of the legislature for smooth operations in the country. The official said several encounters with legislators which turned out to be disastrous meetings between development agencies and the legislators could be traced to failure of the development agencies to dole out money upon request.
BusinessWorld Intelligence gathered that officials of development agencies worried by such magnitude of hopeless corruption among Nigerian officials detailed to act as a go-between them and government to bring life transforming projects to the vulnerable citizens, had weighed several options in order to stop the ugly trend. So far, dragging such covetous government officials to Aso Rock villa is on the card.
