The Nigerian online community is enthusiastic about the World Cup as 50 per cent of the overall 90 per cent viewers would watch the matches via cable television. Local TV stations would command 30 per cent viewers, according to a research conducted by Infinite Insight, Nigeria’s first specialist market research and insight agency. The research was conducted last month.
Among the online community, the research revealed that radio is not an option as less than one per cent will follow the matches on radio, while seven per cent opt for the internet, instead. Three per cent plan to travel to South Africa to follow the event.
In the Nigerian online community, according to the research, awareness of the event is virtually complete with 98 per cent. Excitement about the event is also high with 62 per cent feeling excited or even very excited. 89 per cent are highly confident that South Africa will be capable or very capable to organise and successfully host the World Cup.
However, it is not just about the performance of participating teams; those who will follow the matches are also looking forward to seeing their favourite football stars perform.
Respondents are quite hopeful about the Super Eagles’ performance at the World
Cup as 42 per cent expect the Nigerian team to reach at least the semi-finals, if not the finals (21 per cent). Nonetheless, 21 per cent are less optimistic and expect the team to be eliminated during the preliminary stages of the Cup. About 14 per cent expect the Nigerian team to win the cup, thus drawing with the Spanish team; however, Brazil was voted as having the best chances at winning (18 per cent).
Not surprisingly, almost a quarter (24 per cent) consider the Super Eagles the best African football team, followed at some distance by Egypt (18 per cent), and Ivory Coast and Ghana at 16 per cent. The Cameroonian team is mentioned by eight per cent, while the host, South Africa, achieves a mere two per cent.
Lionel Messi, FlFA World Player of the Year, who currently plays for Barcelona and the Argentine national team, is favourite to be seen at the FIFA tournament by almost a third (31 per cent), followed by Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o (10 per cent), Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba (six per cent) and England’s Wayne Rooney (five per cent).
The sample was drawn from internet users, results are not representative of Nigerians as a whole, but reflect the views and opinions of the Nigerian online community.
