A new platform, BBC.COM, BBC Moblie, for online advertisement and awareness has been introduced in Nigeria to aid businesses and organisations that would want their products and services to be easily accessible by their target audience.
The digital platforms are digital media opportunities that exist on BBC Internet and Mobile platform to Nigerian brands and advertising agencies being the largest online audience on the African continent and the 10th largest in the world. This was according to was a new statistics as posted by the International Telecoms Union (ITU), that shows that about 39.6 per cent of all internet traffic from Africa is from Nigeria, stating that about 29.8 per cent of the African population accesses the internet while 43.9 million Nigerians access the internet making Nigerians the largest online audience in Africa.
Speaking on the new initiative in Lagos to mark the introduction of the digital platform by Isla Macleod, digital business development manager, BBC, Europe and Middle East Africa (Emea),  Mr. Adrian Hewlett, managing director, Habari Media, in collaboration with Wild Fusion, a digital media marketing company, working to promote the BBC’s online platform, noted that the BBC.COM and the BBC Mobile are digital platform for BBC content that has been brought  online for easy access to promote businesses, and a way of ease for consumers to get close to products and services within their environment and beyond.
Hewlett said it is a consumer way of getting BBC content and from the advertiser, it is one of the many ways which they can complement their marketing campaign. “It is a desiring development for Nigeria as it has a large marketing online audience that would like to leverage on BBC.COM for their advertisement in order to usher in business growth.
He added that the BBC Mobile is similar, but allows a consumer to source BBC content on the mobile phone at any time of the day through the internet. This means the consumer has the BBC in his\her pocket at all time, as he\she logs on to it on the go.
Hewlett noted that the benefit for the consumer is ease of use, access to much content for free, and for advertisers, it means they can stay in touch with their target audience, something they can not achieve with television and radio.
To buttress Hewlett’s explanation, Macleod said the BBC’s international website is one of the largest broadcast news websites in the world, and that over 80 per cent of Nigerian users access the BBC websites on a daily basis. “We know the opportunities that exist in the digital space and our visit to Nigeria is occasioned by the need to increase awareness on the media opportunities that exist on BBC digital platform (internet and mobile) because with over 10 million impressions monthly, Nigeria is the largest BBC Mobile audience by country in Africa with four million.
Similarly, Mr. Abasiama Idaresit, managing director, Wild Fusion, commenting on the development said it would be a great opportunity for advertisers and brands that are seeking to engage consumers via internet and mobile especially those targeting a premium audience, stating that the Nigerian business sector should see the BBC digital platform an opportunity for them to enhance their transaction online with the new initiatives.
