ABOUT 25 contemporary photographers representing African sensibilities including George Osodi, Kadir van Lohuizen and Juul Hondius are participating at the ongoing Lagos Photo project captioned “No Judgment, Africa Under the Prism” and they are telling 25 different stories.
Lagos Photo, a project highlighting the basic structure you find anywhere in the metropolis and the condition people take for granted here, is organised by African Artists’ Foundation.
Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos is the host of the event which began at the highbrow hotel at the weekend.  In fact, image of  Oshodi, that’s before the Lagos State Government’  modernisation and beautification touch was also on showcase at the opening ceremony of Lagos Photo. The month-long exhibition features a master’s class in photography, a workshop for young children, a series of indoor exhibitions, as well as cutting-edge outdoor exhibitions at select public locations throughout the city of Lagos. The public spaces include the Muri Okunola Park -Victoria Island, Kudirat Abiola Round About - Oregun Ikeja, Awolowo road roundabout - Ikoyi, and Professor Ayodele Awojobi Park - Onike Yaba.
Director of African Artists Foundation, Azu Nwagbogu said the ultimate aim is to inspire people on the street and every Nigerian to get involved. “Making use of readily available public spaces, the Lagos Photo project aims to establish a community for contemporary photography that will unite, in the city of Lagos, local and international artists, through images that encapsulate individual experiences and identities from across all of Africa.
 It also aims to use the power of photography to address and make visible important social issues in Africa as well as capture the essence of Lagos State from a holistic and historical perspective,” he said.
The Foundation is also taking an educational approach to photography. “We are working with some students in an architectural workshop,” Nwagbogu noted. The annual photography festival is sponsored by the Mondriaan Foundation, the Dutch Embassy, and supported by the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA), Eko Hotel and Suites, the British Council,  Etisalat, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Moet & Chandon and the Lagos State government.
Eko Hotel & Suites which is already promoting tourism, arts and culture in the country said the hotel is delighted to host the unique event, believed to be first of its kind. Chief Executive Officer of Etisalat, Steven Evans said:”We are keen to do something culture in Nigeria’s 50th independence anniversary. It is a great opportunity to do something in this exhibition.” He stated earlier that the company will sponsor amateur photographers to enter into the competition. “It’s something very significant. We are trying to get potential through a number media, entertainment, arts and culture. It gives people access; accessibility is something appealing. Artists from within Nigeria to exhibit it’s going to be a key thing for us. We look forward to it,” Evans said.
