CLASSIC Beverages Nigeria Limited, makers of LaCasera soft drink has once more partnered with the Lagos State Government by participating as a co-sponsor at the Independence Parade which was held in Lagos on the 1st of October 2010. The parade was part of activities to commemorate Nigeria’s 50th Independence Anniversary and took place at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.
The management of Classic Beverages Nigeria Limited worked hand in hand with other sponsors to ensure the success of this remarkable celebration by sponsoring some Lagos State public schools to the parade. The Classic Beverages team was also present to distribute LaCasera and Virgin Colours soft Drinks to all the students who participated in the parade. This was part of the corporate social responsibility efforts which the management of Classic Beverages Nigeria Limited engages in regularly to demonstrate their gratitude towards the Nigerian society.
The parade had in attendance: the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN), top government officials, traditional rulers and other prominent men and women in the society. Also in attendance was the Brands Ambassador for LaCasera, Miss LaCasera 2010 in the person of Miss Onyekachi Udechukwu who was assigned the role of presenting the Nigerian National Flag to the Lagos State Governor. This role is very symbolic as it was first performed by Princess Alexandria, a cousin to the Queen Elizabeth II, (the Queen of England) at the Race Course Square, Lagos, now known as the Tafawa Balewa Square, on the 1st of October 1960. She presented the Nigerian National Flag to Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa alongside other instruments of independence to signify Nigeria’s freedom from colonial rule. The Nigerian flag was raised for the first time on that day at this same venue and has since become a very vital indicator of Nigeria’s freedom.
In his speech with newsmen, the Chief Operating Officer of Classic Beverages Nigeria Limited, Mr Prahlad Gangadharan stated that it was a great privilege for Classic Beverages to be listed as one of the companies to support some Lagos State public schools to this parade. His words were; “the contribution of the Nigerian populace to the growth of Classic Beverages Nigeria Limited cannot not be overemphasized and this is the reason why we have decided to show all of our love and support at this crucial stage of Nigeria’s growth”. He also mentioned that the entire management of Classic Beverages Nigeria Limited felt greatly honoured by the opportunity granted Miss LaCasera 2010, to play a very symbolic role especially now that Nigeria had reached a golden age. He said that he believed that this 50th Independence anniversary celebration would always remain very important in the history of Nigeria and he was happy that Classic Beverages had chosen to identify with it. He also made mention of his high hopes that Nigeria would undergo a dramatic transformation following this Jubilee which would take the country from being an African leader to being amongst the World leading countries. He expressed his gratitude to the Lagos State Government for this partnership opportunity and said that the management of Classic Beverages would always be glad to be a part of a progressive course.
The entire arena of the Tafawa Balewa Square was bubbling with students, staff of corporate organisations, cooperative societies, market women and so on who were elegantly dressed, mostly in the green and white colours of the Nigerian national Flag. Guards from the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Naval Force, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Civil Defence, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority all looking resplendent in their ceremonial uniforms had positioned themselves on the parade ground as early as 7am, that morning. Also on the parade ground, were voluntary organisations such as the Girl’s Guide, the Boys’ Scout, WAI, KAI and students from Lagos State primary and secondary schools, all waiting to salute their great country, Nigeria. Excitement filled the air, when the Governor’s entourage drove into the arena. The Governor spent the first few minutes saluting all the people who were present before he resigned to his position at the podium. The band then led everyone to sing the Nigerian National Anthem after which the parade was declared officially open. The parade was very exciting, with the Colour Party taking the lead followed by the military guards, the police, the voluntary organisations and finally the school children. Also to pay tribute to the Lagos State Governor were several private associations, who came colourfully dressed to grace the event. Different sizes of the Nigerian National Flag were all over the place, making the event even more colourful.
