President Goodluck Jonathan said last week that the federal government has concluded plans to construct 845,000 housing units for civil servants nationwide.
The president stated this at the foundation laying ceremony of the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Civil Servants’ Housing Estate at Kaba District of Kubwa, Abuja. He said that from the 845,000 units, 600,000 would be constructed by the federal ministry of housing, 240,000 by the Federal Housing Authority and the remaining 5,000 through Public Private Partnership.
He expressed the hope that the initiative would solve the problem of shortage of housing for the civil servants and provide jobs for the youth, adding that government was committed to providing adequate housing for Nigerians as part of measures to ensure that the sector contributed the expected 20 per cent of the nation’s GDP. He urged civil servants to see the initiative as part of the government’s efforts to provide conducive environments for them to give their best in support of government transformation agenda.  He also commended Professor Oladapo Afolabi, Head of Service of the Federation, for piloting the scheme and for partnering with the private sector for its implementation.
In his speech, Afolabi said the project was a new dimension in government’s continuous attention to the welfare of its workforce. He said the project would boost the efficiency and morale of the beneficiaries to optimally deliver government programmes and urged civil servants to continue to be loyal and committed to the building of the civil service as an institution with capacity to drive government programmes.
