President Goodluck Jonathan is likely to  visit the United States this week. The journey, whose destination is New York, will see the President performing some official functions while on the proposed three days visit. Coming less than a week after his inauguration for a full four year term, the President’s visit is seen in diplomatic circles as a plus for the growing relations between the United States and Nigeria.  It would be recalled that the United States was the first country visited by Jonathan in april 2010 even while in acting capacity.
Jonathan arrived the U.S. April 11, 2010 for a four-day official working visit during which he will participate in the international Nuclear Security Summit hosted by President Barack Obama.
He met with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden as well as the World Bank President Robert Zoellick.
At an interactive session at the Michael S. Ansari Africa Center (Atlantic Council), the then acting President said there is room for the next generation who are ready to work hard and one of his strategies will be to instill into every youth a value system that will Nigerians  think more about the good of Nigeria instead of individual gain.
He explained his ambition to build infrastructures; create investment opportunities, put in place a solid base for education, employment and good governance. As for 2011 election, he said that he would ensure electoral justice and accountability.
“Nigeria is rising and our rise will be for the good of all…” he said. And to the US he chided, “As friends we must be honest with each other”. Why pat Nigeria on the back as a partner with one hand and put its name on terrorist watch list with the other?
