Businessworld-Atcon Broadband Summit Gathers Momentum

As the forthcoming broadband summit being organised by Businessworld Newspaper in conjunction with the Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (Atcon) gathers momentum, the major players in the telecom industry in the country and abroad, including the global search engine, Google, have indicated interest and support in ensuring that the summit turns out a resounding success.
Speaking on the readiness of BusinessWorld and Atcon to stage a successful summit, Engineer Titi Omo-Ettu, president, Atcon, said the major stakeholders have indicated their support as they hope to partake in the brainstorming that would help fashion out the strategy to connect the next 50 million telecom users in the country. He stated that Main One Cable Company, a major broadband infrastructure provider, has shown huge interest as it hopes to extend connectivity to Nigerians by connecting Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to boost Internet penetration, enhance telecommunications and businesses.
Similarly, Dr. Eugene Juwah, executive vice chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has endorsed the summit as it is in line with NCC’s strategy in facilitating easy broadband access that would further accelerate growth in the industry. He stated that for Nigeria and other African countries to bridge the digital divide, there is need for broadband penetration and that the various landing of the undersea cables such as Glo1, Main One, would increase the level of broadband deployment which has been encouraged under the State Accelerated Broadband Initiative (SABI).
Mrs. Funke Opeke, managing director and chief executive, Main One, a major sponsor affirmed that the Summit is vital at this crucial time of the telecom revolution and also to drive penetration that would facilitate economic growth and also contribute to gross domestic product (GDP).
Also, Mr. Larry Page, chief executive officer, Google, stated that with its presence in the country, a major interest point in Africa, the summit would drive the desired move for the acceleration of broadband infrastructure required for growth in the telecom industry, the interest by foreign investors in the sector and also enhance local businesses.
He said the summit is timely as it would avail participants the opportunity of concentrating on the full utilisation of existing broadband infrastructure, open way for access, enhance connectivity and the potentials of the Internet.
