Parents of over 100 Nigerian students billed to travel to the United States (US) this year to pursue their university education must be prepared to path with over N3 billion for the next four years to see their wards through excluding visa charges and transportation.
BusinessWorld Intelligence revealed that the cost of  higher education has risen  so much  that  it now costs  between N7million (about $45,000) and N8 million ($52,000)  per year,  to give a ward university education in the USA.
This figure does not include students from other parts of the country and returning students even some parents have more than one of their children studying in the US universities, meaning that the figure could be higher. Some well-meaning Nigerians say this does not speak well of a country whose citizens are being ravaged by poverty.
The tuition fees for studying at US institutions vary widely between the states, the different types of institutions and the course of study. And according to officials of the embassy, this is the greatest expense to consider when studying in the states and it may affect the choice of institution.
For  instance, tuition  at community colleges  ranges  between  and $5,000 and  $10,000 per year, while  colleges  charge  between $11,000  and  $15,000 per year. Universities charge between $15,000 and $39, 000 per year. When other expenses are added the total expenditure to be incurred by parents will between $30,000 and $ 50,000.
Currently, total undergraduate charges in the US range between $35, 000 and $55,000 depending on the university. At Harvard University and other Ivy League universities, for instance, total undergraduate charges will increase to $50,576 for the 2010-11 academic year, including $38,700 for tuition and $11,876 for room and boarding facilities.
Over 90 Nigerian students, who recently received admission for 2011, participated in the pre-orientation programme.  According US Embassy, over 70 of these students have partial or full funding (scholarship) worth $2.5 million (about 375million) based on academic performance.
Some returning students and a select group of old and new partners of the Education USA Advising programme were invited to participate in the pre-departure programme packed by the Education USA Advising Centre which also used the programme to highlight its United States Achievers’ Programme.
Living costs and rent will vary depending on the type of accommodation the student opts for. Dormitories cost approximately $3,500– $6,000 per semester depending on whether they offer meals. Living with a host family costs $400–$700 per month depending on whether meals are supplied. Campus apartments cost around $400 per month for a shared room with a shared bathroom and $800 per month for a single private room.
US universities are either public or private institutions. Thus, public school tuition expenses are based on non-resident costs which are less expensive than private universities. It differs from university to university ranging from public cost $5000 a year to $ 30,000 per annum for private institutions. Living expenses come to around $10,000 a year
Cost of education differs from country to country and accordingly the students take their steps. These are either self funded or bank financial aids which help a student to determine his costs while studying abroad.
Before applying to study abroad, the foreign nationals have to show concrete proof of sufficient funds to the universities which can cover their expenses at least for the first year of their college. Only then can they apply for a student visa.
