President Goodluck Jonathan is slated to visit the United States on next week to attend the United Nations General Assembly and a high-level nuclear safety meeting in New York.
Although the travel itinery of the president has not been made public, he will spend more time in New York with a visit to Washington D.C.
It is not yet know if the President will deliver a keynote speech at the 66th UN General Assembly.
The 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly opens on 13 Sep and general debate opens on 21 September in New York The session could make history as the one that gives birth to a nominal Palestinian state. With no shortage of humanitarian crises around the world to tackle during the general debate, the international body could find itself defending its record on the way it handles them. A recent British report describes the UN’s handling of the crises as “very disappointing.”
A recent pact between rival parties Hamas and Fatah increases the odds that the Palestinians will try to force the issue of statehood, based on pre-1967 Middle East war borders, at the 66th session. Some 100 countries have already recognized Palestinian statehood. Israeli diplomats have stressed that such a move violates the Oslo Accords and will not lead to a Palestinian state even if the General Assembly grants recognition. They warn that the move could lead to violence on the ground.
