The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has put necessary measures in place to vigorously accelerate the completion of its Emergency Communication Centres in all the states of the federation, an initiative that would cost over N4billion as this covers the purchase of land, equipment and related infrastructure for its realisation.
The project, which was described by the NCC as vital for sustainable development and enhancement of life of the citizenry, has received wide acceptance by governments of the thirty six states and Abuja, through the provision of land that were subsidised in some states and endorsed due to the crucial role the centres would play in enhancing life and prevention of environmental and human disasters.
It was gathered that the centres which are currently under construction in some states and would be equipped with world class facilities such as ambulances, patrol vehicles, fire fighting equipment, and manned by personnel which would be paid by NCC, as well as switching systems with short codes and capacity that would be interlinked with each state for effective communication during periods of disaster or distress calls.
And in order to foster easy flow of information, the switching system would be designed to articulate calls and transmit them to the appropriate codes for each unit, whether fire fighting or ambulance, to the various security agencies, and from one state to another, whether far or near, as a distress call can be relayed on occurrences from Lagos to Abuja or from Delta to Rivers State as the case may be. In addition, the emergency centres would be equipped with helipads to attend to crucial disaster calls that require quick response, and these would be under the control of personnel paid by the regulatory authority or consultants like it did in other areas.
The construction of the centres which is being vigorously pursued was dogged by some difficulties in some states with peculiar land difficulties, as it was seen as a way of making money. In Lagos State, the government was able to provide the NCC with land at Ajah,
The centres after completion will be under the control of NCC till after a three-year period when they would be handed over to governments of the various states and also, the completion and commissioning may be at varied times because of the response received from the states.
