Banks in different parts of Ogun State have closed shops for business till the new year, for fear of being attacked by armed robbers, BusinessWorld Intelligence can now reveal.
To this end, customers were left stranded, as those who want to withdraw their savings to meet Christmas festive needs and other financial obligations could not do so. The banks embarked on total closure following series of threat text messages from the armed robbers, informing them of their impending visit.
With no meaningful assurance from security personnel about the safety of these financial institutions and their customers, the banks decided to suspend banking activities for now, until the state government is able to beef up security level.
Earlier, Zenith Bank, UBA,Wema Bank, Skye Bank, among others within Ago-Iwoye were invaded  by the men of the underworld, thus, carting away several millions of naira, while customers were consequently attacked.  Diamond Bank at Ijebu Ode was equally robbed as the robbers escaped without being caught.
Many residents have criticised the security lapses in the state while many of the robbery incidences have gone unprobed, even as robbery attacks on banks continues. Last Wednesday, one of the old generation banks was attacked in Sango-Ota area of the state. Sources revealed that Ogun State Commissioner of Police and the state governor held a meeting with the management of banks within the state, promising to beef up security activities to ensure that banks resume their normal businesses.
According to the source, “we have been meeting with the CP in Ogun State and the governor himself promised to deploy more armoured personnel carrier into the nooks and crannies of the state.
Mr. Lukman Oyebamiji, managing director, Sapida Microfinance Bank which has since closed shop to all forms of transactions, said “for the past two weeks, we have not open for business. This is because of the series of robbery attacks going on in the state and there are signs that they can still strike any time.”
