MARKING its annual week, the Serving Union Bank Officers Wives Association (Subowa), carried out a charity visit and gave out gift items to the motherless babies and residents of the Ijamido Childrens Home at Ota, Ogun State, as part of its corporate social responsibility activities.
Explaining Mrs Jane Ebong wife of Mr. Barth Ebong, managing director, Union banks Nigeria Plc and the president of the association, who led members of the association on the visit last week, said that it was line with goal of the association which is to identify with the less privileged members of the society.  Another reason for the visit was to enquire on the welfare of the two of the Willoughby children who had earlier been fostered by the bank. Ebong said that this was part of the banks commitment to the home and to build on the relationship between the two. She confirmed her expectations that the two children; a male and a female, who had been fostered by the bank last year, would be duly fostered for life by the bank and expressed satisfaction that they were getting a very good education and training and promised to increase the association’s commitments to the home.
Mrs Virginia Abosede, matron of the home thanked the association for its kind gestures and explained that the adoption system in Nigeria was not properly regulated, a situation that ensured the home only allowed for fostering and not adoption of any of the children.
The Subowa president also announced the fostering of one additional child by the bank as well as the donation of a full musical and vocal set to aid the children in developing their musical talents which would go along way in assisting their future.
The home which was established in 1958 by the late Ms Willoughby caters for over 630 children and a visit to the home forms a part of the association’s weekly activities. Other activities lined up for the week include other charity projects, pep talks and a dinner night.
