THE Akwa Ibom State government has restated its commitment to deliver a minimum of 10,000 housing facilities in the state by 2011 and will not deviate from its housing policy thrust as housing development is in front burner of its infrastructural development.
Emmanuel Enoidem, the state Commissioner for housing and urban renewal, disclosed this recently, when Mr. Clifford Eze Akasike, the new controller of works, federal ministry of works, housing, urban and regional development, paid him a courtesy visit.
Enoidem said the gateway local government areas like Eket, Oron, Ikot Abasi and Itu will be the first to benefit from the programme as 1,500 housing units will be delivered before the said time.
He revealed that the present administration created a fresh ministry with the determination to make housing development a social responsibility. He further stressed that the presence of mega investors and multinationals is very minimal in the state; hence government is compelled to intervene in housing development to turn the state into a tourist attraction and destination.
In his reaction, Akasike said he considered it appropriate to meet and interact with Enoidem since housing and urban renewal is their counterpart ministry.
He observed that the federal government cannot build houses to accommodate everybody due to huge financial involvement; hence he is in the state to enlighten the people of the private public partnership initiative (PPP). He advised the people to brace up and participate in the programme which is indigenous-driven and people-oriented in nature.
