Leasing as a Way Out of Airlines’ Distress

One of the major factors that grounds Nigerian airlines is the inability to maintain or afford the required minimum of two aircrafts to carry out flight operations at any point in time. What usually obtains in Nigeria is that, the moment an airline starts having financial problems, it becomes extremely difficult to maintain its fleet of aircrafts which must be done at regular intervals; what then follows is a drop in the fleet until it gets to one or even none, resulting in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to wield in with its stick to ground and halt the airline with the law. Industry experts are of the view that, rather than ground to a halt, aircrafts can be leased for continuous operations. However, caution should be taken on the type of lease to go into, as well as on the contract agreement.
